Shutting down the Old Master Q Comics site ..for now
After 18+ years of serving oldmasterq.com with the same Apache web host (Lunarpages, RIP), I've decided to shut it down (temporarily!) for a few reasons.
- It's time for another revamp in design. But I've been so out of touch with design, I don't have any fancy ideas anymore! I think the last time I revamped it was in 2008, when I was freshly high off of learning the magic of PHP and mySQL and Flash was on its way out.
- It's also time for a new stack. PHP is so passé!
- Lunarpages got taken over by a company called HostPapa, and raised my grandfathered annual plan rate by 2x. It's a bit too much for me for a site I only manage like once a week, maybe.
- Hostpapa also informed me that my traffic rates have been maxing out. I supposedly have an "unlimited" plan, plus I really only get like 10,000 visitors a month, but somehow I've been maxing out my daily hits?? Not sure how this work, and I didn't get much guidance, except for a suggestion that I was getting hit by bots. I tried a few things to manage the bots but really had no idea what I was doing; I even put Cloudflare in front of it. But nothing was helping this excessive hit rate. Hostpapa wanted to move me to a private VPN for at least $60 more. F*dat, I really don't want to be paying more.
So I'll just have to shut it down, transfer some domains, move off this old FTP host, and change up my ways. 😩. Sigh!
I will be pointing oldmasterq.com to the OMQshop site for a while until I figure out what to do with the comics site.
I'm not quite sure exactly how to do this properly. Do I forward the domain via a temporary 302 to OMQshop.com?
Do I point oldmasterq's name server's to Shopify's?
I'll probably do the 302.
I think this may break all the google search results of oldmasterq.com comics and they'll all die until I revamp the site.
I hope I find a solution soon.
